Okay, mamas, let’s have a real talk moment.

I was that mom who yelled.

The one who snapped over spilled milk (literally), who felt her blood pressure rise with every dropped toy, and whose patience ran thinner than my kiddos attention span. 

I was an angry mom, and honestly, it sucked.

It sucked for me, it sucked for my kid, and it definitely sucked for my poor husband.

I remember feeling this constant knot of frustration in my chest.

Like everything was a personal affront, a deliberate attempt to push me over the edge. The whining, the mess, the constant neediness – it all felt so overwhelming.

I’d find myself yelling more than talking, sighing dramatically, and just generally feeling like a volcano about to erupt at any moment.

And the guilt?

Oh, the guilt was the worst.

Seeing the fear in my son’s eyes after I’d lost it, hearing their little voices ask, “Mommy, are you mad?”

It would crush me.

I knew this wasn’t the mom I wanted to be.

I wanted to be the patient, loving, fun mom I envisioned before the realities of parenthood hit me like a rogue Lego.

So, how did I start to climb out of that angry mom hole?

It wasn’t an overnight transformation, trust me.

There were plenty of days I still felt the familiar simmer of irritation.

But slowly, little by little, things started to shift.

Here are some of the things that actually made a difference for me:

1. Acknowledging the Problem:

This was HUGE. I had to admit to myself that my anger was becoming a problem.

Not just for everyone else, but for me.

I was constantly stressed and unhappy.

2. Tiny Bursts of Self-Care:

I know, I know, everyone says “self-care.” But for me, it wasn’t about elaborate spa days.

It was about finding those tiny pockets of time. A 5-minute quiet cup of coffee before the chaos started, listening to a favorite song in the car, taking a slightly longer shower.

These little moments helped me feel a little more human.

3. Identifying My Triggers:

I started paying attention to what really set me off. Was it being tired?

Hungry? Feeling unheard?

Once I knew my triggers, I could try to preempt them (like making sure I ate something before the witching hour hit).

4. Lowering My Expectations (Slightly):

Kids are messy. They’re loud.

They don’t always listen the first (or fifth) time. Realizing this wasn’t a personal failing on my child’s part (or mine!) helped me take things less personally.

5. Finding My Calm-Down Strategies:

When I felt that familiar anger bubbling, I started trying different things.

Sometimes it was taking a few deep breaths. Or it was stepping away for a minute (if safe to do so).

Sometimes it was just biting my tongue and counting to ten (or twenty!).

6. Talking About It:

Venting to my husband or a trusted friend who “gets it” made a world of difference.

Just knowing I wasn’t alone in feeling this way was surprisingly powerful.

7. Focusing on the Good:

Instead of dwelling on the spilled milk, I tried to focus on the cute way my kiddo said “oopsie.”

It sounds cheesy, but shifting my focus, even for a moment, could diffuse some of the tension.

Final Thoughts: From Angry Mom to Calm Parent

Look, I’m not saying I’m a perfectly zen mom now. There are still days when I feel my patience wearing thin.

But the difference is, I now have tools to manage those feelings better.

I react less and respond more. I apologize to my son when I mess up.

And most importantly, I feel more connected to my child and less like I’m constantly battling.
